Overview

BitTorrent is a file sharing protocol developed in 2001 for the distribution of large files without the bandwidth demands of direct downloads. By operating in a decentralized fashion BitTorrent alleviates the demands of moving large data files. The files are mitigated by control servers known as trackers. These trackers are integral in communicating and negotiating with new peers. Users join a cluster of hosts, known as swarms, upon launching downloaded torrent files. Data is loaded from these hosts in a non-linear, simultaneous fashion.
